InOut 6.0: An inside-out account

India's BIGGEST and most LOVED community hackathon took place on a fine weekend, 19-20 October, and we at Devfolio had a blast hosting it!

Before we dive into the recap, here's a stat to get a sense of the hype and excitement for InOut. Over 5k applications! If this blew your brains out, we are with you on this one. 🤯

With that out of the way let's start with taking a moment to appreciate the ingenuity of our engineering team. They decided to put in some pre-hackathon hacking to build a QR code check-in feature in a couple of hours! Thanks to them, check-ins at InOut were a breeze.

While we have had a couple of tech talk sessions at past editions, we were proud to be able to host the first-ever full-fledged InOut conference this time around. The stage was set at MLR Convention Centre, Bangalore to welcome some of the best hackers in the country along with a bevy of enthusiastic attendees eager to hear from our incredible line-up of speakers.

After a seamless session of check-ins starting from 8:30 AM on Saturday, attendees and hackers alike started the day by grabbing some delicious, much-needed breakfast. ☕️🍽

At a houseful auditorium, Nash from Devfolio kicked off the InOut 6.0 conference with a few glimpses from past editions and stats that made this one the biggest to date. Soon after Nash's briefing, Roshan from Pratilipi and Ashu from Clarisights gave a quick insight into their startups while we got ready to have our first speaker on stage.

Our first speaker, Vikas Parashar from HackerRank, spoke about the need for web applications to be as accessible as possible for everyone! 👨🏼‍💻👩🏼‍💻

Next up was Bhagat Singh, iOS engineer at PhonePe, who gave a thrilling account of how hackathons changed his life! Being an ex-hacker at InOut 3.0, his words were particularly inspirational for the hackers in attendance.🤘

Aditya Asgaonkar, a researcher at Ethereum Foundation, then took to the stage to speak about the vast opportunity for 'Web 2.0' developers in Ethereum and how to get involved with the #BUIDL movement. ⚡️

Roshan Alexander spoke about how Pratilipi leveraged the power of microservices to scale to 6 million users with a team of just 10 members! 💪🏻

Next up was Sudhanshu Yadav, frontend architect from HackerRank who spoke about how Async patterns in JavaScript have evolved overtime. 🕰

After a hearty lunch, attendees and hackers gathered back at the auditorium to dive into the world of blockchain, guided by Arpit from Matic Network. This was followed by Nirbhik and Angela from Matic Network, who took to the stage to talk about their exciting bounties on offer for the hackers. 🎖

Lokesh Devnani from Clarisights then spoke about the challenges that scale brings to code. He used the elementary "Hello World" program to showcase the complexity a developer needs to be aware of while shipping its enterprise version to production! 💻

Our last speaker for the day was a very familiar face from our past editions, Siddharth Shetty, from iSPIRT foundation. He spoke about how efforts to build an infrastructure for enabling widespread adoption of drones is taking off. 🚀

After wrapping up the conference, hackers got their schwag-filled goodie bags with our brand new InOut 6.0 stickers and t-shirt and other goodies from our sponsors. This is sure going to make folks jealous. 😉

InOut 6.0 kicked off at 5:30 PM with a record number of hackers in attendance. The hacker zone was all set for 24 hours of constant ideation, innovation, and implementation! 🔥

The best part about InOut is that hackers are free to build what they think can bring a major change in the world! This has resulted in InOut being the birthplace of some amazing runaway hits.

We had one more surprise waiting for the hacker, delivered just when they needed it the most! It was fun giving away our new and upgraded Devfolio hoodies at midnight to ward off the Bangalore chills!! ❄️

Caffeine is to hackers what batteries are to laptops. We made sure hackers had access to caffeine energizers, from time to time! Just when the tiredness was kicking in, Red Bull came to the rescue.☕️🥤

One doesn't simply come to InOut and leave without having any fun!! We had some crazy moments playing Type Racer with hackers with swift fingers, late at night. 🎮

Hackers also got tons of giveaways from our game zone. Who said snakes and ladders were just for kids?

After an intense 24 hours of hacking, it was finally time for hackers to submit their hacks on Devfolio. They waited eagerly, with fingers crossed, for our superb panel of judges to hear them pitch their hacks.

It was not an easy task for our judges to choose the best from the 73 submissions received! In the end, 10 projects were chosen for the final presentations on stage!

Third Prize

TeamOSC, with their hack, Alfred won the third prize at InOut 6.0. Alfred takes care of your loved ones when you're not around while making it a fun daily activity for them. It detects the onset of medical conditions before it is too late.

Second Prize

Team Three Summers secured the runners-up place for their CCTV Recap hack. With their hack, you can summarise hours of footage shot by static CCTV cameras into a short clip that shows all events as if they're occurring concurrently with timestamps.

Team NoTeamName bagged the best hardware prize for their project Glassidious, which helps you swap your mobile phones with their smart glasses in a jiffy.
