Looking Back to When Base Went Around The World
Join us as we re-live Base Around The World 2024, a buildathon aimed at helping builders bring emerging economies onchain by solving for their community.
Base Has A Dream Mission 🎯🪄
It started with a mission. A mission to bring a billion users onchain as quickly, securely, and easily as possible. And the Base team went full steam ahead this year in furthering their mission.
The Base team packed their bags and embarked on a journey around the world to empower builders from regions with the highest growth in onchain adoption. And it took less than 80 days.
From you, for the world 🌎
Base Around The World was a buildathon series that focused on four regions: Africa, LatAm, India, and Southeast Asia. These regions have two things in common: they’re all fast-growing economies, and they show the highest rate of growth in onchain adoption.
Base wanted builders in these regions to build solutions for problems that they deeply understood. And the only way to do that is to solve problems that they face in their daily walks of life.
For example, 10-minute deliveries are great, but how about building the first onchain app that reliably brings groceries and medicine to people in your neighbourhood. Or the first app that helps local builders & business owners accept international payments more securely and without exorbitant charges. Or a Farcaster client that helps local builders find their tribe in regions near them.

The buildathon kicked off simultaneously across all four regions on September 27th and lasted till October 21st. It included workshops and sessions on a range of topics — like smart wallets, OnchainKit, Basenames and other tools to help builders familiarize themselves with the tools that could superpower their projects.

Side Events and Meetups: A Base-ic Need 🎫
Building from the comfort of your home is great. But meeting and brainstorming with peers in-person is based, and our builder community definitely agrees.
The Base team organized and supported multiple virtual and in-person meetups across 6 countries. Jesse Pollak (Creator, Base) and the Base team met with builders in Argentina, Kenya, India, Singapore and the Philippines to inspire the builder communities, with their last stop being DevCon 2024 in Thailand!
The builders themselves also took charge of organizing meetups to keep the community vibing and thriving. Be it hacker weekends, Hack Days, brainstorming sessions, or a meetup with the Base team—and we were more than hyped to host them at our HQ, pictures below 👇
The builders over at FBI also helped organize Onchain Premiere League–a football tournament to help local Indian builders work and play with the Base team. And we’re glad to have played our part in helping Base win ;)
The Chosen Ones 🏆
We saw 700+ projects from 1200+ builders across all regions, out of which 56 emerged as the final champions. Check them out below:
Based Africa
The Based Africa buildathon had the highest number of projects submitted, and the ones who claimed the crown were: Base Sessions, Basepay, The Unbound Project, Flexclub, RideBase, Azza Defi, AfroBase, Lendbit, Delar, Kombat, Yield, learnOnchain, Legitify, Antugrow, Health Trove, baseEastAfrica, Maisha Care, MQR Pay, PayFlip, Base Tours, Data Bud, LearNova, and Element Pay.
Based India
The Based India winners were: Based Coffee, Tike, Basics, SuperBaseNames, DefiLens, TagFi, CultureCo, CastMoney, EtherZap, Lumen, Vox, MiniBase, and Neom.
Based SEA
Based SEA was won by 12 projects: Cube, AgroFund, Based Chula Students, AutoBase, Onchain Buster, Magnify Cash, StreamFund, Local Coins, Kaivest, Onchain Scholars, WhiteBlue Swap, and Coinbase Smart Passport.
Based LatAm
And last but definitely not least, these 8 projects bagged the trophy at Based LatAm: CrediTalent, Bondi Finance, CLPD Stablecoin, BOBC Stablecoin, BuildMyEvent, Sembrando El Cambio, OpenVino, and AI Agent for Coinbase Wallet.
These winners got a chance to compete for a total prize pool of 100 ETH (later raised to 200 ETH, c/o Base 🫶), along with a pool of 10B $BUILD tokens contributed by Talent Protocol.
Not only that, but the winning projects also got a shoutout from Jesse at the Based meetups around the world.
